Vascular / Endovascular Surgery
The University Surgical Associates Vascular Center in Chattanooga, TN is comprised of Vascular Diagnostic Services (VDS), USA Special Procedures (USP) and the Vein Center at USA with services including the management of aneurysm disease, carotid artery disorders, renal and mesenteric vascular disease and peripheral arterial disease of the arms and legs, as well as a wide range of venous disorders from varicosities to chronic venous ulcers.
All University Surgical Associates (USA) vascular surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) in both general and vascular surgery and provide comprehensive care for patients with vascular disease. This involves the detection and diagnosis of vascular disease by noninvasive ultrasound and arteriography, with correction by open surgical reconstruction or by the use of the latest minimally invasive endovascular techniques.
At present, 60–70 percent of patients can receive a minimally invasive endovascular option for the care of their arterial or venous disorder at USA Vascular. Often, this allows same day surgery or early discharge, minimal pain and fast recovery.
USA introduced its VDS lab in 1982, becoming the first vascular lab of its kind in the region. VDS remains the only vascular lab in the area accredited in four areas of testing; extracranial, arterial, venous and visceral. The lab also requires all technologists to be registered in vascular ultrasound through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Non-invasive procedures offered include carotid ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound for the renal circulation, mesenteric circulation, aortic aneurysms and iliac circulation, arterial studies for extremity arterial circulation and bypass graft, and stent or aortic endograft surveillance.
USA also offers venous ultrasound for deep vein thrombosis or venous insufficiency and preoperative vein mapping for graft placement and dialysis fistula placement. Invasive procedures offered include endovenous laser therapysclerotherapy, venous stripping and radio frequency ablation, fistulagrams, arteriograms and venograms.
USA's vascular group is also heavily involved in ongoing externally funded vascular research in the form of clinical research studies. Device manufacturers often fund studies for surgical research to find out more about such procedures as abdominal aortic aneurysm endovascular repair or the use of lasers in occlusive disease.
