When it comes to hernias, there is no ‘one size fits all.’ Hernias can appear in several locations in the body, so they have different names. The USA Hernia Center treats multiple types of hernias.

Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia is located in the groin region. It is the most common type of hernia, and most commonly found in males.

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach moves into the chest cavity through the diaphragm.

Parastomal Hernia

A parastomal hernia is a type of incisional hernia. It happens when part of your intestines stick out through your stoma, which is a surgically made opening in your stomach.

Ventral Hernia

A ventral hernia is located in the abdominal wall. The most common cause of these hernias are activities that increase pressure in the abdominal walls, like lifting heavy objects, chronic coughing, pregnancy, obesity, or injury to the abdomen. There are three types of ventral hernias: umbilical, incisional, and epigastric.

Incisional Hernia

Incisional hernias occur after previous abdominal surgery at or near the site of the surgical incision. Any activity that increases pressure in the abdominal area before the incision is fully healed may cause an incisional hernia. These could be physical activity, gaining weight, straining during bowel movements, coughing, sneezing, or becoming pregnant.

Femoral Hernia

A femoral hernia is located in the upper thigh right below the crease in the groin. These hernias are not common, but more likely to be found in women. These hernias can be confused with inguinal hernias.

Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia a type of ventral hernia because it is located in the abdominal wall, around the belly button. It happens when the intestine pushes through the umbilical ring and can occur in infants or adults. These are relatively common in infants and in some cases will go away on their own over time.
